The nation depends on you!

As we come to the close of our planned activities here is your last mission! (sorry it’s a bit wobbly but it was being filmed in a top secret facility quickly for the sake of the mission!)

This is a massively slowed down version – morse code is much faster than that – here is an example of the real speed of the letters – operatives must have been amazing!

Work out this message for the sake of the nation!!

Once you have worked it out you are ready to then prepare your sleepover camp to join in with our recorded camp fire songs.

Tune in at 8pm so that we can all sing together and the beauty of this is that you can rewind and sing your favourites again and visit our channel at any time to watch in the future too! We hope you enjoy it and again don’t forget to send in some photos of your campfire sing song xx

🇬🇧🇬🇧 Friday – Day 8!🇬🇧🇬🇧

Well here we are at our celebration day! Thank you all for being with us over the last 8 days making memories with #GuidingGwentVEDay

Today there is a mix of scheduled things you can do if you wish with the national celebrations organised by the Royal British Legion, and our own campfire sing a long at 8pm.
⭐️At 3pm Raise a glass
Nations Toast to the Heroes of WW2 and everyone should say “To those who gave so much, we thank you”

The activities on our activities list can then be slotted into your day when you are able!

🇬🇧 Make your own commemorative mugs and plates using paper and craft material
🇬🇧 Make toilet roll shakers. (At 7pm bells were supposed to be rung out over the nation but this has not been possible – therefore at 7pm shake your shakers or use bicycle bells, jingle bells or anything you can find to ring for victory!) Here is a nice link
🇬🇧Watch our fire safety video and have a go at making your own fire with craft materials you have at home.
🇬🇧 Guiding members learnt semaphore and morse code so they could help pass on messages.
⭐️Make some semaphore flags out of two pieces of paper taped to wooden spoons and draw a line diagonally on it and colour one side red and one side yellow and have a go making the letters.
⭐️ Practice Morse Code and wait for our secret message later today to decipher!

Look our for our posts later on today and keep us posted with the fun you are having x

🇬🇧 🇬🇧 Thursday – Day 7 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

Today is all about getting ready for our VE Day camp! We are thinking about what to take on our camp and practicing a basic camp skill.

🇬🇧 Watch the video of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret on camp and notice the wartime safety practice they had to do.
⭐️Many families had air raid shelters in their back gardens. Build a shelter either inside or outside, using anything you are allowed to use – (blankets, cushions etc)
⭐️ Make a list of the things you would need for an overnight in a shelter or at an overnight camp

🇬🇧Learn some knots using string or wool or ribbon.
⭐️If you are age 5-7 use ribbon, string or wool to tie around sticks using a bow and leave the ends long like streamers
😍 If you are older than 7 watch this video for the challenges below…
⭐️If you are age 7-10 learn the clove hitch and reef knot
⭐️If you are age over 10 learn the clove hitch, reef knot and two others.

Good luck and happy camp preparation day!

ps this is has an easier explanation of the clove hitch – I like the two loop method!

Wednesday – Day 6!

Today we start to get excited about our celebrations on Friday – it’s party preparation day!

During times of rationing (and little bit like we are today) women had to really plan how they shopped and what they could buy. Sugar was rationed so cakes were made with fruit and vegetables to add natural sweetness.

Create a menu for the picnic (try to include food from the 1940’s such as corn beef or a carrot cake). Here are some great wartime recipes

Think about what you will need to buy before Friday (you may want to include marshmallows, wooden skewers and tealights to roast during our campfire?!)

We would love to see your menus…

🇬🇧🇬🇧Create bunting using either red, white and blue paper, or paper and pens/crayons or paint; use a template or red white and blue clothes.
⭐️⭐️Or use this amazing template which also remind us of how Girlguiding helped in the war… 🇬🇧🇬🇧

If you are a Guide – create bunting listing things on each piece of paper of things you are proud of that you have done in Guiding that you are proud of using the letters of VE DAY and things you would like to do in the future
