Girlguiding Gwent, as a coastal county, decided to support the Mission to Seafarers for Christmas 2018. Newport has one of the oldest Mission houses in the country and offers friendship and help to seafarers from all over the world. Many seafarers are away, at sea, over the festive season delivering vital goods. They are often forgotten in their dangerous profession – but we would notice if they did not do their job! They are often away from, and out of contact with, their families for months at a time.
Units around the county collected items to be placed in “goody bags” including toiletries, sweets, note books and pens, warm hats and gloves (knitted by other supporters of the Mission) and Christmas cards from the girls. The response was overwhelming and filled all the bags provided by the Mission and extra bags were made out of hats so no seafarer would be missed.
Families of seafarers have said that it is not the value of the gifts but the thought that others are looking out for their loved ones that is important. Thank you to all who supported this – your generosity was very much appreciated.
